For Read Langhenry, the future is about what fits and what feels good.

It took just one trip out West — one look at the city of Albuquerque, N.M. —  for the soon-to-be Chestatee High School graduate to decide on his next destination.

A family friend wanted him to attend the University of Wyoming, but on the way to visit the campus, Langhenry discovered the natural beauty surrounding Albuquerque and the University of New Mexico.

“I decided that’s where I want to be for the next four years,” Langhenry said.

He graduates from Chestatee High School on Saturday, and four years is the farthest Langhenry has planned in his future. The calculus whiz and son of a former math teacher knows he wants to study engineering, but he does not have a plan for what kind of engineering he wants to do.

“I don’t actually know too many people who’ve studied (engineering), it just sort of seemed the best fit for me,” Langhenry said.

While most of his friends stay in Gainesville or head to the University of Georgia, Langhenry said he is getting excited about living on his own on the opposite side of the country and getting “a new start.”

Langhenry said his zeal for new discoveries comes from his father, who traveled a lot during his service in the Army.

“I’m a little nervous, but I’m pretty excited ... I feel I’ll do all right out there,” Langhenry said.
