Claude Pepper of Florida was one of the longest serving members of Congress. He served in the U.S. Senate from 1936 to 1950. He was elected to the U.S. House in 1963 and served until his death in 1989.
Pepper was defeated by George Smathers. In the largely pre-television era, both Smathers and Pepper campaigned in communities across the state.
