DOT salt barn sits unfinished off I-985
Lack of federal funding leads to halt in project

The Georgia Department of Transportation is using the former rest stop along I-985 North between Oakwood and Flowery Branch to store gravel to use when roads become icy. Plans for the site include adding storage for salt to mix with the gravel.
Plans to complete a Georgia Department of Transportation “salt barn” off Interstate 985 have been put on ice until more funding is in place. The department is generally scaling back on projects because of a lack of federal transportation funding this year, and the winter weather staging area off I-985 between Oakwood and Flowery Branch is one of the casualties. “Georgia and all states will receive only about 70 percent of funds budgeted for this year and Congress did not fund the full fiscal year,” DOT district spokeswoman Teri Pope said.
