A man who was charged in the death of his 22-month-old son is free on bond, according to the Hall County Sheriff’s Office.
Raley A. Lane, 33, was released from the Hall County Jail on Monday after posting a $46,000 bond, according to Hall County Sheriff’s Sgt. Kiley Sargent.
Lane was charged with involuntary manslaughter, cruelty to children and reckless conduct Saturday after his adopted son found a small-caliber handgun on a night stand and accidentally shot himself.
The boy later died in surgery at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, according to reports.
The incident occurred at about noon Saturday at Lane’s home in the 2600 block of Old Cornelia Highway.
Lane was in the same room when the boy accidentally shot himself. He rushed the boy to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where the child underwent emergency surgery for a gunshot wound to the abdomen.
The boy was later flown to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston, where he died during surgery at 4:45 p.m., according to Hall County Sheriff’s Col. Jeff Strickland.
Lane was arrested after Hall County investigators found several firearms in the house. Although many of the firearms were locked in a safe, Sargent said there were "several" that were unsecured in the residence, aside from the one on the night stand.
The incident is still under investigation, Sargent said.
