Volunteers ended up collecting 31 tons of debris and trash from Lake Lanier during the Lake Lanier Association's 22nd annual Shore Sweep on Sept. 24.

"We actually are extending our efforts into this week and next to pick up some additional Styrofoam that we couldn't get to on (Sept. 24)," said Joanna Cloud, the group's executive director, on Wednesday.

About 600 people showed for the event, nearly the same as last year. Volunteers pulled 28 tons of garbage from the lake in 2009, Cloud said.
