Thunderstorm watch in effect in area through tonight
Sunday's high temps could reach 96 with chance of more storms

A severe thunderstorm watch is in effect throughout North Georgia today until 11 p.m.

The National Weather Service is reporting a chyance of isolated thunderstorms across North and Central Georgia this afternoon and evening. Some could bring frequent lightning, hail and strong winds up to 45 mph.

The forecast calls for a 20 percent chance of storms today and tonight with a high near 94 and a heat index reaching 98 degrees. The chance of storms diminishes after 2 a.m. but increases again Sunday in the afternoon heat.

Sunday's high is forecast to reach 96, with head index values topping 100 degrees.

Today's high has reached 93 degrees as of 3 p.m., according to the NWS recording station at Gainesville's Lee Gilmer Memorial Airport. The head index is at 99.
